3some pros, some consAug 04, 2009
By C. Ross "shopaholik"
we got this stroller for our first baby, when he was about 5 weeks old. I will preface this review by admitting I was drawn to peg perego products, as we were given the car seat/carrier and i wanted something compatible. until we decided on a stroller we were using one of those snap and go bases, which really are horrible. they dont actually snap at all, the carrier just "rests" on the base. moreover, the maneuverability was mediocre at best. we were living in nyc at the time, and we needed a stroller that could withstand bumpy sidewalks and small spaces in which to turn. needless to say i was desperate to get a real stroller, but i did not want to get a huge bulky travel system, but still wanted to be able to incorporate the carrier for walks, considering he would not be big enough for a regular stroller for 5 months.

enter peg perego skate. same bells and whistles as the bugaboo. manhattan is ridden with bugaboos. it's pretty ridiculous. but i figured the 4 digit price tag had to have SOME merit for all these people to buy it. the skate was a more affordable option, and with the seat also doubling as a bassinnet, it one ups the bugaboo in that you didnt have to store an additional piece in your already cramped apartment.

pros:
-seat converts to a bassinett for newborn (as opposed to the bugaboo which has 1 seat, and then the bassinett is a separate piece)
-adjustable stroller height and adjustable handle bar height and angle. this was useful for daddy who is much taller than i
-comes with all necessary accessories: boot, rain guard, cup holder, air pump for tires
-maneuvers like butter. easy to push with one hand, turns on a dime, handles bumps with ease...even easy to push on grass in the park, thanks to the large back wheels
-great coverage, boot kept my little one nice and toasty in winter, and when it was extra windy the rain guard was perfect to cut the wind. the canopy on it is my Favorite feature. it's got great coverage to block the sun at all hours of the day. however it would be nice if there was a window so i could see the baby when he is forward facing. cant have it all i suppose, even with a price tag of $600!
-flexibility: loved the forward and rear facing feature, so easy to go from one position to the other.
-great fabric, colors. i got the green bubbles. nice and neutral for either sex. fabric on seat is plush and soft, as i would/should expect at this price tag.
-great aesthetics. this stroller looks good. a head turner indeed. and if thats what you are after, you will get it with this.
-easy to assemble, instructions were pretty good, no issues there.
-bassinett feature was fabulous. if you are lucky enough to have a baby who likes to lay on his back and sleep in the stroller, this one will be a dream for you. unfortunately my son was a tummy sleeper at 7 weeks, and so getting him to sleep on his back while in the stroller became hard to do after that. once i could finally get him down, he woke up as soon as we got back inside. sigh. but prior to that, it was great. it was nice and soft and cosy in there for him, keeping out the winter chill, and the ride was nice and smooth for him. it rides like a cadillac.

cons:
-weighs a TON. I had read reviews warning about the size and weight, but figured it wouldnt be an issue bc we lived in an elevator building. we had a few steps at our building entrance and even just those 5 steps were a HUGE pain in the butt. the stroller weighs like 35 lbs, and that doesnt include your child. plus the fact that you want to slide up and down the steps easily, with limited jerky movements, so as not to wake the newborn you FINALLY got to sleep. it was HARD to do. in fact it made me dread going out with the thing alone, i would just opt to wait for my husband to join so he could do the lifting for me. that being said, one has to be independent enough to handle these things on her own, or risk cabin fever, even if it is 10 degrees outside. so on the days where i was brave enough to tackle a walk on our own, i was able to "roll" it up and down the stairs without disrupting a sleeping newborn, but it was not without some serious muscle power.
-no storage basket. i didnt know how i would feel about the netting on the bottom. while it can accomodate a bunch of shopping bags, and the bungee cord thing works to hold them all in place, i wish it had been designed with a basket so that i could just toss something down below without having to check periodically to see if it was still there.
-bulky. i know a stroller like this cant possibly be lightweight or small, but this this is HUGE. however, it did fold up nicely and after folding it you can stand it up vertically against a wall or in a closet. but once we moved out of manhattan and into the burbs, thats when the bulkiness really started to get to me, and you would think the opposite, right? it takes up so much room in our trunk, and we have a honda accord, which has pretty good trunk size for a sedan. the stroller barely fit, and was a struggle to get in and out, not only for the weight but just due to it being cumbersome. again, the reviewers had warned me, but when we got this stroller we did not know what type of car we would have or if we were definitely moving to the burbs. having to lug this stroller in and out of the trunk again made me dread running errands. i ended up typically just using the carrier in a regular shopping cart for errands once we became suburbanites. when we were still in manhattan, i found my big stroller to be a constant annoyance for rude people dealing with small aisles. one time i was in the grocery store and some old man just started pushing my stroller down the aisle...didnt even say excuse me or anything. just another reason for us to escape city living.
-head room seems small. my son is now 8 months, and the top of his head is brushing against the top of the seat. how can this stroller accomodate a 3 yr old, when at 8 months its already a bit cramped for my baby?
-the straps are a bit strange. its a 5 point harness system, but it is not attached to where the child's back leans. instead, it's kind of just free floating. i would have preferred a traditional buckling system where 2 shoulder straps protrude from the top, two from the side, and one from the seat.
-wished it had one more seat position that was vertical. my kid likes to be sitting up straight now, if he is reclined too much he feels like he is missing out on any action. there are 3 positions: flat (horizontal) for bassinett, then the next up is maybe 45 degree, which is good for babies who cannot sit up on their own yet, and then the last, which is not much more upright than the 45 degree angle.

in summary:

-this stroller is great as an outdoor stroller, to be used primarily for walks through the park or on city streets. it has great maneuverability and glides along with ease.

-it is not a good stroller for quick errands, or indoor shopping in potentially small or cramped spaces, like city stores. it is heavy and cumbersome. even in an suv it will take up a lot of trunk space. in a typical nyc apartment it will become a piece of furniture.

-this is a great stroller for newborns and up, but at 8 months my son's head is brushing the top, and no he is not abnormally tall. not sure how long it will last him. however it will be great for our subsequent children at the newborn stage.

-if you are looking to find that stroller that fits all your needs, you simply wont. i learned that the hard way after agonizing over having to spend more money on a second stroller, which was not easy for my husband to accept, especially given how much this one costs. but, most parents will tell you, you need more than one at some point. i use this stroller for walks with my son. the sun shade is amazing and the ride is smooth for him. i use a macleren umbrella stroller for errands, shopping, etc. at 12 lbs, its a nice change from this monstrosity. the macleren has become my favorite, for its light weight and fold up feature in a snap. makes errands SO EASY. with the Skate, it took me forever (in comparison) to fold it down, wrestle it to fit into my trunk, etc.

if i had lived in the burbs when my kid was born, i would have opted for a travel system i think. ive learned that different strollers fit different needs. this one was good for some things, bad for others. overall, i am not too disappointed with it, but there was a time when i considered selling it. but i figured it would be good for our next baby. if i could return in at this point in time, would i? yes. but would i have when he was 5 weeks old, and i was using it all the time? no.

4Nearly perfect - Fantastic ease of movementFeb 02, 2009
By SLC
I'll sum it up quickly for parents who have little time:
Pros: Smooth ride, daughter loves sitting high and feeling close to everything
Cons: Heavy, doesn't fit in many cars or trucks with lids, no snack tray, wide

Overall the Skate is fantastic for how it holds my daughter, she's cozy, comfortable and seems very "in the action", in other words she's pushed forward towards the world and can reach out and touch things, dance around in her seat, etc.

The negatives are more annoyances, but don't impact her, so it should fully impact a decision to purchase. It is SO heavy, you really need to remove the seat from the base to load it in/out of a car. And if you have a car, check the dimensions before you purchase, because it barely compresses. I drive a BMW X5 and it takes up the entire trunk! Also, it's quite wide, which makes maneuvering through stores somewhat difficult, especially if the cup holder is attached since it hangs outside the frame - odd design.

The largest negative, and one that does affect my daughter, is that there's no snack tray. I've read that the new model will come with one, but unless they offer it as an accessory for this model, not so good for purchasers.

Overall, it looks great, rides smooth and is certainly the Cadillac of strollers.

5Once you actually try it, You'll HAVE to HAVE ONE!Aug 19, 2009
By J. Haas "Rebel Reader"
This stroller often gets poor marks for weight, but seriously, it's not much more than others in it's class. The weight is SO negligible when you are actually lifting it. And given all the AWESOME things this stroller can do, I gladly overlook any additional weight. I had a small compact stroller first, then I went to a full size, and finally am the most satisfied with the functionality and versatility of the Skate. I'm sticking with this one. I'm not returning it!

My favorite things about this stroller are:

1) The seat/bassinet can be raised or lowed into 3 different heights. The tallest setting is perfect for trips to the zoo or anywhere that has a railing that children need to see over. All the other strollers were way too low and my child either couldn't see, or I constantly had to take her out of the stroller at each exhibit. It's also perfect table height at restaurants, no need for the grubby restaurant high-chair, the Skate rolls right up and you're good to go!

2) SO EASY to maneuver! It does seriously "skate", and you'd only know by actually pushing one. It has great shock absorption too.

3) They do make a snack tray, where other manufacturers of similar models do not.

4) Bassinet and chair are all in one... no need for extra accessories to take up space in my closet when not in use.

5) Peg Perego's "Freedom of Movement" harness is a definite pro in my book. The only people that I've heard speak negatively about it have never actually "owned" a PEG!! Like I said, we've had 2 different strollers before this one and I found that my child was so much happier in her Skate stroller as she didn't feel confined and could actually lean forward when there was something she wanted to see. The child is safe, they are definitely NOT going anywhere... I thought this was such a smart a fabulous design. Ingenious really.

6) Large canopy. LOVE the canopy. That's again another HUGE pro and required feature in my book as we live in a very sunny state...

5Great stroller, but a little too heavyMar 19, 2009

I bought this with Peg Perego 2009 Primo Viaggio Corallo Car Seat. The base frame works beautifully with the car seat. The car seat can be adjusted to sit very high on the frame, so I can easily check on my baby and she can actually see me even when she was a couple weeks old and could not see very far. Now that she is older, she enjoys her view (she loves looking at the colorful vegetables when we are in the grocery store) and I think it helps her to take in more of the world by being able to see things other than people's calves.

The stroller itself is great too. The fabric feels very luxurious and the bassinet is so comfy that my daughter actually prefers it to her sliding bassinet at home. The ride is super smooth even on bumpy sidewalks and dirt roads, thanks to the air filled rear tires, and it is very easy to maneuver around sharp corners. The build is sturdy and feels like it can survive a category 5 hurricane, and the folding mechanism is very smooth - no struggling with stuck or squeaky hinges.

I actually researched into Bugaboo Cameleon before getting this stroller, and I am happy with the choice. This stroller comes with a cup holder, the boot, and car seat adapter, which I would have to purchase separately with Bugaboo. Also, Peg Perego makes its stroller in Italy, not China; I don't usually care much about the place of origin, but after all the headline news about lead paint in toys, this actually became a big plus.

My only complaint about this stroller is its weight. As other reviewers mentioned, this thing is quite heavy (30lb+). I mostly drive or use the subway with handicap access, so this is not a big problem for me, but you can forget about it if you need to take it up the stairs. Everything considered though, if I am going to prop my baby this high up, I would prefer a heavier base frame to make sure that it holds up well and the stroller/car seat will not topple.

I would have given it 4.5 stars if I could because of the heaviness, but all in all, this is such a great stroller, so between 4 and 5 stars, I gave it 5.

5Great all-around strollerDec 05, 2009
By Evgeni Belin "ebelin"
I love this stroller. It is beautiful and functional. Large wheels make it an easy ride even on rough surface and let you control stroller single-handedly even outside (not just inside polished mall floors). It is very easy to fold/unfold and I feel we would not make half the stops/trips if it was harder to take out of the car. I guess one mistake people do - they try to handle it as one whole unit, whereas I take off bassinet and deal with wheels and bassinet separately. This way setup is a breeze. For a change, it is proudly made in non-china (Italy). Very nice (single-handed) reclining, quite generous canopy. Padding is very soft and nice to touch. Cup-holder is nicely designed and holds bottles of various sizes very well. But it does catch on doors and tables in the beginning - one needs to get used to it before you can confidently negotiate crowded cafe's.

We've had it for 8 months and loving it. Plus, it is not another cortina/bugaboo (whichever crowd you hang out with). Stylish and different.
